To bill for a contact lens bandage you must use procedure code 92071-"fitting of contact lens for the treatment of ocular surface disease".
This code is unilateral which means that in order to receive proper reimbursement you should use an RT or and LT modifier. If performed on both eyes it is best to code the RT and LT eye on separate lines rather than using a -50 modifier or putting both the RT and LT on the same line.
It is very important to point out that when you bill for a contact lens bandage, the insurance company is kind of putting you on the honor system. You see, you can't just pull an expired contact lens or a "tester" or "sample" lens off your contact lens shelf and use that as a bandage...that will get you in deep doo doo in the event of an audit. Rather, the lenses that you use must specifically be branded as contact lens bandages, anything else is FRAUD.
As always opticXpress Strives to be on top of billing and coding procedures in order to best serve the optometric community.
